Different stone types require different cleaning pressures and treatments. Indian sandstone, for example, can handle more pressure than limestone, which is softer and more prone to etching. Porcelain paving needs yet another approach. We adjust our methods accordingly.

Step 2: Deep Cleaning

Using a flat surface cleaner — not a lance — we pressure wash the entire patio to remove algae, moss, dirt, and surface staining. The flat surface cleaner delivers an even clean without the streaking that lances cause, and it's gentler on the stone.

For black spots — those stubborn dark marks caused by lichen — we apply a specialist biocidal treatment. Black spots are one of the hardest things to remove from natural stone, and they often require chemical treatment rather than just pressure.

Step 3: Weed Removal and Joint Clearing

Weeds are raked from the joints and all failed grout is removed. This is the messy, labour-intensive part that most cleaning companies skip — but it's essential. If you re-grout over old, loose material, the new grout won't bond properly and will fail within months.

Step 4: Re-Grouting

Once the patio is completely clean and dry, we re-grout the joints. For most Gloucester patios, we use a premium polymer-modified jointing compound that's flexible, weather-resistant, and weed-inhibiting. For wider joints or specific stone types, we may use a resin-based grout instead.

The right grout makes an enormous difference to both the appearance and longevity of the patio. Cheap, basic sand-and-cement mortar will crack and wash out within a year or two. A quality jointing compound can last five years or more with proper maintenance.

Step 5: Sealing (Optional but Recommended)

For natural stone especially, a quality impregnating sealer is worth the investment — it soaks into the stone and creates a barrier without changing the appearance.
